Introduction

One of the attractions of the royal architecture of Gaur is the Hidden Darwaza, which is known for its mysterious history and folklore. Built during the Mughal period in the 16th century, the Darwaza was once an important gateway into the palatial precincts of Gaur.

History and background

It is believed to have been built during the reign of Mughal Emperor Shah Shuja (1655 AD). According to local legend, members of the palace used to play hide-and-seek or royal amusement games here, from which the Darwaza derives its name. Some believe that it was the entrance to the secret tunnel that connected the palace to other parts of Gaur.

The historic town of Gaur (where the Baradwari Mosque, Dakhil Darwaza, Feroze Minar, Lukochuri Darwaza, Kotwali Darwaza, etc. are located) is located in the Malda district of West Bengal, near the border with Bangladesh. There are several easy ways to reach Gaur from Kolkata:

1. By rail (the most convenient way)
Nearest station: Malda Town (MLDT)—about 335 km from Kolkata.

Regular trains (such as Padatik Express, Gour Express, and Intercity Express) run from the Howrah and Sealdah stations of Kolkata.

Gaur is about 16 km from Malda Town station, where local taxis, autos, or e-rickshaws are available.

2. On the road
Distance from Kolkata: About 345 km (along NH-12 or NH-34).

Malda can be reached in about 6-7 hours by private car or bus.

From Kolkata to Malda, direct government (NBSTC, SBSTC) and private buses are available.

3. On the plane
The nearest airport is Bagdogra Airport (Siliguri), about 250 km away.

From Bagdogra, one can reach Malda by taxi or bus.

Alternatively, it is most convenient to travel to Malda by train or road from Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata.

Ways to travel
One can tour all the historical places (Baradwari, Dakhil Darwaza, Feroz Minar, Latan Mosque, Lukochuri Darwaza, etc.) in a day by hiring a car, auto, or e-rickshaw from Malda Town.
