Introduction
Among the historical monuments of Gaur, the Lottan Mosque is an important structure. Built in the 15th century, the mosque today lies in ruins, but its architectural style and ornate design bear unique testimony to the artistic and technical prowess of the Gaur Sultanate.
History and background
The Lottan Mosque was built during the reign of Sultan Yusuf Shah (1474-1481). There is a dispute about the name "Lotan." Some say that the mosque is named after a dancer or concubine of the sultan's court. Some believe that the name comes from the rotund design (Lotan) of the dome and arch of the mosque.
The mosque was a place of worship for the local Muslim community and had a special significance in the elite society of Gaur.
Architectural style and features.
Constructed of red brick, the exterior walls have terracotta carvings and ornaments.
Multiple arched doorways and small domes are characteristic of the Sultanate style of architecture.
On the inner walls were carved flowers and leaves, geometric designs, and calligraphy.
There was once a dome on the roof, which has now collapsed.
Although today it is in ruins, the remaining walls and arches highlight its architectural grandeur.

According to local folklore, the story behind the mosque's name is that of a court dancer named 'Latan.'
Many historians believe that the name actually comes from the architectural design (lotan).
Parts of the interior decoration of the mosque are now preserved in the Malda Museum.

Today, much of the Lottan Mosque lies in ruins, but its ornate brick walls attract tourists and history lovers.
Visitors to Gaur visit this mosque along with Feroze Minar, Baradwari Mosque, and Dakhil Darwaza.

Nearest town: Malda Town (about 16 km away).
By Rail: Malda Town station is connected to Kolkata and other major cities of India.
By Road: About 6-7 hours’ drive from Kolkata along NH-12 (NH-12).
It is most convenient to travel to Gaur by hiring a local car from Malda.
