Baradwari Mosque (Bara Shona Mosque), Gour-Malda, West Bengal

Introduction
One of the finest structures in the ancient capital of Gaur is the Baradwari Mosque, also known locally as the Bara Sona Mosque. At one time, it was named so because of the gilded decoration on its dome and walls. A unique example of the architecture of the Sultanate period, this mosque is the main attraction of Gaur tours today.

History and background
The Baradwari Mosque was built during the reign of Sultan Nasiruddin Nusrat Shah (1519-1533). The name of the mosque, 'Baradwari,' is derived from its twelve arched doors.
It was the largest place of worship in Gaur, where many worshippers could offer prayers together. In local history, it is also known as the Royal Jama Masjid of Gaur.

Architectural style and features.
The temple is built of red brick and stone.

The special feature of the Baradari is the twelve arched doors, which were used for ventilation and lighting.
The dome and walls once had a gilded polish and terracotta decoration.
Inside, fine Islamic calligraphy, flower-leaf designs, and geometric ornaments can be seen.

Unknown information
The mosque was once gleaming with golden polish, the reflection of which could be seen in the sunlight from a distance.

According to local folklore, it was the "royal Friday prayer center" of Gaur.

At present, the remaining domes and arches remind us of the richness of the past.

The current state and prospects of tourism
Even today, the Baradwari Mosque is the biggest and most attractive mosque of Gaur. Preserved under the aegis of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), it is popular with history buffs and tourists alike. Winter (October-February) is the best time to visit.
