History

Chennakesava Temple is constructed by Hoysala King Vishnuvardhana in 1117 AD. It is said that that was the temple he chose to construct in appreciation of lord Vishnu which to him marked a victory over the Chola kings. Chennakesava is a name referring to: Beautiful Keshava, or charming form of Lord Vishnu. The temple indicated their political and cultural strength in the Belur, the Hoysala Empire capital city. Religious rituals were not the only things that were developed here but also artistic elements like art, sculpture, music and dance. Successors of the Hoysala kingdom and other good kings also helped in its expansion and its sustenance. Due to this, the variety of the temple architecture and the sculpture became greater over time. There are beautiful carvings of images related to the Hindu mythology like Ramayana, the Mahabharata and the Bhagavata Purana on the
Chennakesava Temple. Not only these are religious stories but are also the hallmark of invention and competency of Hoysala artists. Today this temple is seen as the pride of the Hoysala Empire and the one unique piece of a medieval art of India.
