History Behind —Lotus Mahal, Hampi
Lotus Mahal is a typical structure of the Vijayanagara Empire (14th-16th
century), originally included in the Zenana Enclosure. Supposedly, it was built
for the rest and private meetings of the women of the royal family. According
to some historians, it was also sometimes used as a place for secret meetings
of the king and his close advisers.
After the Battle of Talikota in 1565, most of Hampi's architecture was
destroyed, but the Lotus Mahal remained relatively intact. It probably escaped
complete destruction due to its non-religious character and robust construction
style.

Architectural style and features
The Lotus Palace is a fine example of Vijayanagara architecture, with a fine
blend of Hindu and Indo-Islamic styles. Its design is made in such a way that
it looks like a lotus flower, which is the main reason for its name.

open verandahs, making it symmetrical.
