Introduction
Rupeshwar Temple is a historic Shiva temple in the Rajbari Temple Complex of Ambika Kalan in the Purba Bardhaman district. Although small in size, it is rich in art and history. The temple was originally built in the 18th century and is named after the builder. The walls of this flat-roofed temple feature traces of terracotta decoration, a fine example of the art of the time. History and Background
Rupeshwar Temple was built in 1765, at the initiative of the Zamindar royal family of Ambika Kalan. It is believed that it was built by Maharaja Tilakchand's first wife, Rupkumari Devi. The temple is named after him.
The temple is part of the Kalnar Rajbari Temple Complex, which also has many other terracotta temples from the 18th and 19th centuries. These temples are a reflection of the art, culture, and devotion of the zamindar-ruled Bengal.
