Introduction
Kolkata is a multi-dimensional city where Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Buddhists, and many other communities coexist. However, many do not know that this city was once an important center of the Jewish community as well.
The beginning of this Jewish history is the Neveh Shalom synagogue. It is particularly significant as the first Jewish place of worship not only in Kolkata but in the whole of India.
When Baghdadi Jews from the Middle East took Kolkata as their home in the last century, there was a need for a place of worship. Out of that need arose this peaceful place of worship—the name Neveh Shalom, which means 'Abode of Peace."
Today, amidst the hustle and bustle of the bustling city, it stands as a mute witness to the rich multi-religious heritage of Kolkata.
History and background
The Neveh Shalom Synagogue is the oldest synagogue in Kolkata, marking the institutional beginning of the practice of Judaism in India. It was built in 1831, when the Baghdadi Jewish community living in Calcutta first felt the need to organize a place for their religious practice.
One of the leaders behind the construction of this synagogue was the influential people and businessmen of the Jewish community of Kolkata. Their goal was to create a permanent center of prayer for the Jews living in Kolkata—not only as a place of worship but also as a cultural and social meeting place.
The early Neveh Shalom was a relatively simple structure. However, over time and due to natural erosion, the building became weak. Later, in 1884, the Magen David Synagogue, another large and magnificent synagogue, was built nearby. Then the old structure of Neveh Shalom was rebuilt and expanded, and it was preserved in its new form.
Today, it is located next to the Magen David Synagogue and is considered an important part of Kolkata's Jewish history. Although no longer regularly worshipped, the structure is a traditional symbol of Kolkata's past religious diversity.

There were separate seating arrangements for men and women, which was part of the Jewish religious tradition.
