The history of Akshardham Temple
The history of Akshardham Temple is associated with Swaminarayan Dharmacharya and his ideals. This temple is dedicated to Lord Swaminarayan (1781-1830), a great spiritual master and social reformer of Hinduism. The idea and inspiration for this grand temple project came from Yogiji Maharaj and later Pramukh Swami Maharaj. Their dream was to build a temple that would showcase India's spiritual wisdom, religious heritage, and cultural glory to the world. The construction of the temple began in the year 2000, with the hard work of 11,000 volunteers and skilled artisans over a period of about 5 years.
It was formally inaugurated on 6 November 2005 in the presence of President of India A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, and Pramukh Swami Maharaj. Akshardham is not just a religious place—it is the result of a spiritual and cultural movement where the values of ancient India have been presented to the modern world through extraordinary art and technology.

The Architectural Style
The architecture of Akshardham Temple is one of the finest and purest examples of ancient Indian temple architecture. It has been built entirely following the traditional Indian style, where the use of modern construction materials such as concrete or iron has been completely avoided.
Main features of the Temple:
The main temple is built of pink sandstone and white marble brought from
Rajasthan and Karnataka.
The height of the temple is about 141 feet, the width is 316 feet, and the
length is 356 feet.
23 domes, 20,000+ idols, 148 ornate pillars, and numerous sculptural carvings
make this architecture unique.Portraits of deities, saints, singers, dancers, and classical idols are seen on
the inner walls and domes of the temple, depicting the rich history of Indian
culture.
The most interesting part:
Gajendra Peeth: A huge structure around the base of the temple with 148
elephant statues carved on it—each of real size and expressing a different
perspective. Naitik Shobha: The exquisite designs and the stories, and the embellishments on each
dome and pillar are impressive. The Sahajanand Exhibition Hall, the IMAX Theatre, and the Boat Ride—these are
also extensions of this architectural style, which highlights spirituality
through modern technology. This architecture is not just to be seen; it is to be experienced, where religion,
history, and art come together to create a sublime experience.
