Bibi Ka Maqbara was built in 1660 by Azam Shah, the son of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, in memory of his mother, Dilras Banu Begum. The architecture is similar in many respects to that of the Taj Mahal in Agra in northern India, but it is distinct from the Deccan region in its own traditions and architectural style.

The chief architect of Bibi Ka Maqbara was Ataullah, who was also inspired by the architecture of the Taj Mahal. The entire mausoleum is built of white marble and basalt stone. The main tomb is made of marble, but the surrounding domes and minarets are covered with limestone.
