Firoze Minar (Gaur, Malda, West Bengal)
Firoze Minar, one of the most famous historical monuments of Gaur, is a unique example of the glorious history and architectural style of the Sultanate of Bengal. At a height of about 25.60 meters (80 ft), the minaret is modelled on the Qutub Minar in Delhi, but with its own characteristic Gaur art.
History and background
Firoze Minar was built during the reign of Sultan Saifuddin Firoz Shah (1487-1489). It is believed to have been built as a monument to celebrate the sultan's military victories.
According to local legend, the sultan himself stood at the top of this minaret and watched over the kingdom, and it was also used in royal ceremonies.
Architectural style and features.
• Height: about 26 meters (approximately equal to five stories).
• Structure: Built of red brick, divided into five steps (floors), the design in the form of a narrowing at the top.
• Staircase: Inside is a narrow staircase that leads to the top.
The outer walls of the minaret once had ornate carvings and terracotta panels, which are now partially eroded.
Inspired by the Qutub Minar in Delhi, it is small in size and built with local craftsmanship.
Unknown information
• As per the resident, the top of the minaret once had a stone dome or crown, which is now lost.
• It is believed that there was once a light system from the top of the minaret, so that the boundaries of the city could be understood from a distance.
Firoze Minar is also referred to by many as "the miniature Qutub Minar of Bengal."
Current status and tourism prospects.
Firoze Minar is still one of the main attractions of Gaur. Tourists can climb to the top of the minaret and see the ruins of the entire Gaur city.
It is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and is an important centre of Gaur tourism.
