History
Baroli temple
complex is thought to have been constructed between 9 th and 11 th century AD.
Historians believe that initially these temples were constructed under the
governance of Gurjara-Pratihara dynasty. Pratihara kings were devotees of
Shaivism and hence, a majority of these temples are devoted to Lord Shiva. The
compulsory temple is the Ghateshwar Mahadev Temple which is the centre of the
whole Baroli community. Other than this, several small and large temples can be
found here that possess Vaishnava and Shakta influence too. The Nagara style
has a huge impact in the design of the Baroli temples. The Indian temple
architecture was important especially in this era in fine sculpture and
mythological representation and it clearly manifested itself in the temples of
Baroli. The ruins of ancient temples remind us of the excellence of ancient art
and architecture although most of them have suffered due to political
instability, attacks and corrosions of ancient time.
