History of the Dwarkadhish Temple: A Memory of Lord Krishna

World Temple - Trilok Sunder
The Dwarkadhish Temple is called by many names—"Jagat Mandir," i.e., World Temple, and "Trilok Sunder," i.e., Most Beautiful of the Three Worlds. It is said that this temple was established in ancient times by Vajranabha, the great-grandson of Lord Krishna. The Hindu theologian and philosopher Adi Shankara visited this temple in the 8th century. A monument commemorating his visit is still present in the temple.

A unique piece of architecture
The grandeur of this temple can be seen by climbing 56 steps. Made of limestone and sand, the five-story structure stands on 72 pillars. The peak of the temple reaches a height of 78 meters, where 52 yards of cloth flags fly, which are changed five times a day. The flag has symbols of the sun and the moon, indicating that Lord Krishna will remain here as long as the sun and the moon exist.

Chalukya architecture and ornamentation
Built in the Chalukya style of architecture in the 16th century, the temple has carvings of mythological stories and characters. The temple has two entrances—Swarga (entrance) and Moksha (exit). Inside is a golden Dwarkadheesh statue made of black stone, holding a flute in his hand and shining jewels on his body.

Myths and legends
According to a popular legend, once Maharishi Durvasa set out on a long journey with Krishna and Rukmini. On the way, Rukmini thirsts for water, and Krishna digs the earth with his bow to reveal the Ganges. But Rukmini got angry and cursed Rukmini for not giving water to the Maharishi. This is believed to be the reason behind the construction of the temple.

After visiting the temple, the beach can be reached by crossing the Gomati River via the Sudama Bridge. Taking a dip in the Gomti River purifies the mind and body. In the evening, the temple is filled with music and dance.
