Ahom dynasty: Assam's identity in 600 years of history

1. Beginning: Arrival of Sukaphaa and Ahoms (1228 AD to 1826 AD)

Sukaphaa, the founder of the Ahom dynasty, was a leader of the Tai-Ahom people who travelled from the Yunnan province of China and entered Assam in 1228. He established co-existence with the local people in the eastern part of the Brahmaputra Valley. Sukaphaa established a new religious state through diplomacy and cultural fusion, not war.

The foundation of this kingdom was ethnic tolerance, an agrarian economy, and an independent polity.

2. The administrative and military structure

The Ahoms developed an efficient administrative system, centered on the Paik system, where subjects helped the king in agriculture, military service, and construction, in exchange for land use.

Their politics was non-partisan and power-centered, with the king's advisory council or buragohai, burphukan, etc., playing an important role.

3. Expansion of the Empire and the Mughal Conflict

In the 16th and 17th centuries, the Ahom kingdom spread throughout Assam. They conquered various local tribes and kingdoms and established a unified kingdom.

The Ahoms became legendary in the face of repeated invasions by the Mughal Empire. In particular, in the Battle of Saraighat in 1671, Lachit Borphukan led the Ahom forces that defeated the huge forces of the Mughal general Ram Singh on the Brahmaputra River.

This victory was a symbol of not only the protection of the territory but also the freedom, self-respect, and courage of Assam.

4. The Beginning of the Fall: Infighting and Outside Aggression

From the beginning of the 18th century, the Ahom kingdom witnessed internal conflicts, battles for the throne, and the Moran-Matak rebellion. Using this weakness, the Burmese (Burma) invasion began.

Although the Ahom rulers sought British assistance, the British annexed Assam in 1826 with the Treaty of Yandia, ending Ahom rule.

5. Cultural and historical impact.

The Ahom kings were not only warriors, but they were also known as secular rulers. They were tolerant patrons of Hinduism, Shaktism, and Vaishnavism.

The Rangghar, Kareng Ghar, historic temples, and tanks of Sivasagar, built during their rule, are still the pride of Assamese architecture.

The contribution of the Ahoms to the development of the Assamese language and culture is also undeniable. Their rule is considered to be the longest and most influential in the history of North-East India.

Conclusion

The Ahom dynasty is not just a political history; it is the root of Assam's identity. In 700 years of rule, they have written an indelible chapter of courage, unity, culture, and freedom.
